I have been painting since 1966. This mural ranks among the largest I have
produced to date. It measures 18 feet long by 5 feet high. It to
approximately 128 hours to complete. This was first painted for
the owner of the Bon Ton Restaurant in 1999. The Restaurant is under new
ownership is now Mack's Road House in La Grange, Texas. It is a
story telling mural that has many things that represents someone significant in
my life. Since the mural is a romantic fantasy, I created the
story below to share the emotions behind each portion.
Entering a world of dreams and fantasy from the far
right, after having had a romantic dinner by candlelight at at one
of the quaint little restaurants, follow the cobble stone walkway or enter
the park from the lower right center. Either way we smell the sweet odors and
see all the beautiful hues of the rainbow in the flowers and trees. We can
continue over a lighted bridge, stopping to feel the cool breezes blowing. We
notice the white doves cuddling on the bridge. These two lovebirds
represent my best friend and her Internet love interest that I introduced to
her. They had just announced their love for each other the day before I
received this commission. Their romance were the first inspiration for
this mural. Continuing on up the path, to the left, that leads to a
gate to the Secret Garden. The gate has the initials to my second
inspiration, my husband, Danny, who has been by my side since 1962. As we
backtrack to just before the bridge, we can hear the songs of the birds
hiding in the trees and see the butterflies gathering nectar from the flowers.
Looking out to the front of the bridge we can see the waters cascading over the
rocks in this babbling brook. Can you find the frogs there? The
frogs, birds and butterflies represent the employees of the restaurant that
encouraged me as I worked. Before the bridge we take the path along the
creek where we can enjoy the sounds of the rippling waters over the little
waterfalls, to a crossing over the creek and back the other side. We
notice the majestic old live oak tree that represents the strength of family.
The heart on the tree is empty but we are sure all the true lovers of
the world will see, in their hearts, their own initials there.
The swing for two, in the tree, is for budding romances that will grow into a
strong life long love. Back on the path we approach the white gazebo,
which is the focal point of the painting. We have to stop for a while to
relax and enjoy the white swans in the water. These swans represent our
children and their families, the light of our life. We will end our tour
here as the whole scene is bathed in the light left by the sun's last rays at
dusk.
Take this imaginary walk
with your love or you family through the mural. Find your favorite spot
and sit a spell and enjoy. Tell each other how this painting makes you
feel then email me and share with me how the painting has effected you and your
loved ones. I would love to hear from you.
